Training Content

You will learn the current best practices of Motivational Interviewing, how to apply it in a variety of contexts, and will advance your ability to move clients along in their therapeutic journey.

Motivational Interviewing is one of the most powerful tools a clinician can have in their tool-kit!

Who Should Attend

This training is appropriate for behavioral health practitioners, therapists, primary care, nursing and peer support. Even if you have taken Motivational Interviewing trainings before, this will be a great refresher on this impactful format of care.

Motivational Interviewing Learning Objectives

  1. Understanding the Spirit of MI.
  2. Increasing your ability to recognize when to use MI and to enter which MI process.
  3. Exposure to what MI is and is not, as well as the skills used in MI.
  4. Participation opportunities to practice MI skills with feedback from the instructor
  5. Increasing your knowledge and skills to listen for a person’s intrinsic motivations for change.
  6. Information from current research (meta-analysis) of MI practice and from Motivational Interviewing:
    Helping People Change, 3rd Ed. (2013) William R. Miller, Stephan Rollnick and emerging information
    regarding the 4th Edition, to be published in 2023.
  7. Intentional focus on utilizing MI in working with specific groups identified by participants, working within a
    culturally competent practice, and working in a variety of settings.
  8. Determining ways to continue learning about and developing MI skills (peer mentoring, guided practice)
    Content will include discussion and practice of the following:
    MI Spirit: Collaboration, Compassion, Evocation, Acceptance
    MI Processes: Engaging, Focusing, Evoking, and Planning
    Core Skills: Open-ended questions, Affirmations, Reflections, and Summaries
    Additional skills: Supporting Autonomy and Exchanging Information.

Our Speaker:

Heather Lynch, MINT Trainer

Heather Lynch holds a MA in Counseling Psychology, completed the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) Train New Trainers course, trained a group of new international MI Trainers in Tallinn, Estonia, and has been learning and teaching MI since 2006. She has created and facilitated many levels and types of MI training during this time period. As one of her colleagues stated: "I've seen Heather skillfully facilitate MI learning activities, facilitate MI discussion, and engage trainees in a way that makes learning complex skills fun". She currently uses her skills as a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor and MI Trainer in Bend, Oregon. She is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers.
